The Cost of Clear Eyes

On re-entering the world after surviving it — and what that teaches us about the systems we almost agreed to disappear inside.

There are places I have stood in twice. Once with the eyes I was given. Once with the eyes I had to earn.

For six years, I traveled for work. I moved through airports, cities, conference rooms, and corridors with the particular efficiency of someone who believes they understand what they are looking at. I was competent. I was present. I filed what I saw into the appropriate mental folders and moved on. What I did not yet understand was that my filing system — the entire internal architecture of how I interpreted the world — had been built by a version of me that had never been tested by the possibility of not being here.

Then life interrupted the arrangement. Significantly. Twice.

The gradual migration of decision-making authority away from the human and toward the system — not through coercion, but through accumulated small surrenders that each seem reasonable in isolation. The system offers an answer. You accept it. The system offers another. You accept that too. Eventually the question of what you think stops feeling urgent, because the system has been answering reliably and you have other things to do.

This is not a malfunction. This is the design. And it was already well underway in human systems long before AI arrived to accelerate it.

What AI does is compress the timeline. What might have taken five years of gradual deskilling inside a bureaucratic process can now happen in a single tool adoption cycle. The feedback feels good — the output is cleaner, the decisions come faster, the friction disappears. What also disappears, quietly, is the capacity that produced the judgment that was worth automating in the first place.

The peer-reviewed literature is beginning to catch up. Research published in Artificial Intelligence Review in 2025 documented AI-induced deskilling in clinical medicine — physicians losing diagnostic capability not because they became careless, but because the AI was so consistently faster and more confident that deferring to it became the rational local choice. Safe in the sense that the human being on the other side of the interaction is still, recognizably, themselves.
